Iberian ham, a healthy product

Technicians and experts test with different studies the healthy properties of Iberian ham.

The latest scientific findings claim the healthy benefits of Iberian ham for health and position it as one of the greatest exponents of Spanish cuisine and the Mediterranean Diet, a benchmark for a varied and balanced diet.

A recent study by the Endothelium and Cardiometabolic Medicine Unit of the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid, led by Dr. Saban, states that the consumption of Iberian ham improves vascular health in healthy people. The research concludes that including Iberian ham within a varied and balanced diet benefits health in the medium and long term and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The fats of the Iberian acorn-fed pig have 55% oleic acid which reduces the bad cholesterol (LDL) rate. It is, therefore, one of the most heart-healthy foods of all animal fats. The moderate consumption of Iberian ham provides benefits for blood pressure and in general improves the good health of blood vessels.

The ingestion of ham provides vitamins of group B (B1, B2, B3, B6), and D, and minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium, phosphorus or magnesium, and proteins of high biological value. It has antioxidant properties and reduces aging due to its high content of vitamin E and it is consolidated as a protective source of cardiovascular type due to its high oleic acid content.

The latest studies endorse Iberian ham as one of the jewels of gastronomy, due to its multiple qualities (flavor, juiciness, texture, etc.) and its recognized healthy properties.
